Hello? Remember Me?

It’s funny how now that I’m done with school I seem to have less time, more laundry and it’s become almost impossible to stay up past 10pm.  Maybe it’s my new position at work…took some time to get the derailed train back on track.  It’s definately been hard not being in SAT with my dad since he’s been sick especially to bring some sanity to Toot’s life having to deal with everything including our high maintenance mother.  I find it interesting that crisis has led the family to learn more about what we are like as individuals and how we function as a family.  It’s just a more honest, “oh my gosh, we actually said it out loud” dynamic. :)

So after a 6 month hiatus, I fiiiiinnallly went out for a run yesterday.  IT WAS HOT (Yes, I said it).  I went out at about 5:30 pm on my 3 mile route.  I ran about a mile and a half and then I just had to stop running.  My legs were doing well–they wanted to keep running, but my brain was just not with it.  The brain was just all out of sync with the body.  Then the little voice in my head wouldn’t shut up–you know the one–the one that just rambles on and on and it wasn’t being very nice (I’m not crazy, really).  So I walked about 3/4 of a mile and ran the rest of the way home.  Not a good run.

So I treated myself to a trip to Target today and I bought myself a sport watch!  Start!  Stop!  Start! Stop! Fun.

Three more days!

Woah!  Three more days until San Diego Toots!

Strategy for a Marathon

-Marnie  Mueller

I will start

when the gun goes off.

I will run

for five miles.

Feeling good,

I will run

to the tenth mile.

At the tenth

I will say,

“Only three more

to the halfway.”

At the halfway mark,

13.1 miles,

I will know

fifteen is in reach.

At fifteen miles

I will say,

“You’ve run twenty before,

keep going.”

At twenty

I will say,

“Run home.”

Wear Your Jeans

Friday April 18th

Denim Day event-

Make a social statement with your fashion statement: wear jeans with a purpose! The Denim Day campaign started in 1999 in response to the Italian Supreme Court overturning a rape conviction because the 17 year old victim wore jeans. The justices reasoned that the victim must have helped her attacker (her 45 year old driving instructor) remove her jeans because they were “tight,” thereby implying her consent. Italian women protested the decision by wearing jeans and every year since the ruling, activist groups in the United Sates have participated in the Denim Day Campaign.

Checking in

Let’s just say it’s been a pretty stressful couple of months.  Pito’s hospitalization really threw us for a loop and I think I’m still trying to get it together.  After spending two weeks living in a hospital, it was hard to get back into swing of thing with my-fiesty 2 year old, work, and school.

My first week back to class earlier this month got interesting.  I got home from work around 1pm, ate lunch and fell asleep soon after.  At 5:45pm (mind you, class starts at 6pm and it takes me at least 30 minutes to get there) I realized I was asleep.  As I got up from the couch, not even realizing I had been sleeping, I had to sit back down because I was sooooooo dizzy that I couldn’t walk straight.  Eventually I made it up and stumbled into the front room claiming that I was going to class.  Drew looked at me puzzled.  Then I threw up.  Lumpy, I know you feel my pain. ;)  Still I insisted on going to class so Drew offered to drive me there.  Along the ride I continued to be sick.  Apparently I requested to go to the ER after I leave class.  We get to my building and I realized that I really couldn’t get up.  So I sent Drew with my paper and some really random directions in search of my class.  He didn’t find it.  Came back for more guidance.  He found it, told my professor I was sick and that I was going to the ER.  From what I gathered later, my classmates tried to convince the professor to let them leave class early so they could visit me at the hospital.  Nice try!  When Drew got back to the car, I was told I canceled my request to go to the ER and chose to go straight home to get in bed.  I went to bed when I got home and slept and slept and slept.  Woke up with a bad headache the next day.  That’s all  I remember.  Guess my body was telling me to chill out.

On the bright side of things, I got a promotion at work!  I was offered the position of Director of Shelter (sounds fancy, eh?).  Right now I’m acting as the Interim Shelter Manager until a few positions are filled and a bunch of us play musical chairs realigning ourselves in our new positions (lots of changes occuring).  However, I’ve been working like crazy trying to piece together a position that was, in essence, a mess.  My coworkers have been really supportive and helpful in this process and I’m greatful that I work with a bunch of awesome women!  Go us!

Hopefully, once things settle down I can venture out for a run.  Graduation is just in a little over a month!  Can’t wait!

Yeehaw! San Antonio Stock Show Stampede!

Well the Carrera girls strapped on their cowgirl boots and went for a little 4 mile run on the San Antonio Rodeo grounds.  We would have gotten to the finish line faster if these bulls hadn’t gotten in our way!

See us waaaaay back there?

Yep!  There’s nothing like the smell of bull poop and barbeque smoke to welcome you to the finish line.  Gotta love Texas!

In Banana’s head as she boots scootin’ boogies away from the computer…….

“Don’t break my heart!  My achy, breaky heart!”

“ALLLLL my exes live in Texas!  That’s why I hang my hat in Tennessee!”

“God bless Texas with his own haaannnds!  Brought down angels from the Promise Land!  Gave them a place where they could dance!  If you wanna see heaven, baby here’s your chance!”

“We’re a two of a kind, working on a full house!”

Happy Thursday!

So close!

I’m supposed to be working on a reflective paper describing what I learned in my MPA program. I started writing it yesterday and now I’m just kind of stuck mostly because I’m so anxious. I will probably say this a million times between now and May–I’m in the last semester of graduate school! I’m so excited to be close to the end. I’m in the Capstone class (graduation/thesis) class and we’re reading a great book called The Tipping Point by….ummm…well the last name is Gladwell. It’s a book that talks about the kind of people and events that start epidemics (not necessarily the scary disease kind, but things like trends, fashion, ideas, etc). Sally, you should check it out cause it may help with getting the message out about She Runs.

Anyway, I did run my 6 mile route last Saturday. It was good, except my left knee kind of hurt toward the end. Maybe it’s time to invest in a good pair of running shoes.

By the way, I graduate on May 3rd…would be nice to have a Texas/Minnesota cheeering crew. ;)

A New Year

Okay, it’s been a while since I’ve posted something, and many little accomplishments have occurred since about Thanksgiving time. I ran my first four miles with Toots while I was visiting the family over the Thanksgiving holiday.  It was coooooold!  I didn’t even sweat until we were almost home!  Toots wrote a little blog about that. Then sometime around x-mas time, I ran 4.5 miles (approx).  I had such a good run that day.  For some reason I thought I ran 6 miles, because I had planned on running 6 miles.  I was so excited that I texted Toots to tell her.  Then I checked the map and realized that I only ran 4.5 miles.  Ha!  Anyway since I thought I had run 6 miles and felt good about it, I used it as my inspiration to actually run the 6 miles.  I like to start each new year by doing things on new years day that I want to do the entire year as to make it a promise to myself that I’ll actually do those things.  So after I madly cleaned my house and cooked a small meal, I set out for a 6 mile run while my baby napped.  It was great!  I ran through a part of my neighborhood that I’ve never been through and met some new dogs.  I felt pretty good.  It feels like the more miles I run, the easier it is.  Isn’t that weird?

Well, I need to do some reading.  I’m in LAST semester of my Masters program!!  Woohoo!!  :)
