Week 1…again.

So…I decided to run the San Diego RNR and week 1 starts now…haven’t registered yet, but will soon…just working on the “time off” situation at work.  Today’s 3 miler was short and to the point, no frills, on the treadmill during my lunch break at work.  This seems to be my trend…squeeze the early training short runs during lunch on the treadmill simply in the interest of time, then getting the boys “acclimated” to me not being around much as the training progresses and the runs become longer.  This mainly affects Punxsk8erdude’s need for assistance with schoolwork & transportation to/from soccer practice in the evenings.  Tomate works evenings so he’s not usually around to be able to assist most of the time.  Punxsk8erdude’s cool about it…he thinks it’s cool that his “mama” runs marathons.  He also saw the Spirit of the Marathon and already has an list of all the marathons he’d like to run when he’s older…who knows, maybe sometime in the not so far away future we’ll run one together.

Ice, ice, baby.

I couldn’t bear the thought of walking in this weather today (look to the right, people!!) , so I decided to be hardcore and skate run, in spite of the 5 inches of ice coating the sidewalks. It was about the slowest 2.5 I’ve ever skated run, but I actually was a little bit over dressed. I was dressed for my return, which was into the wind, so the way out was HOT!

A toast to the Snow Miser. Or would that be Jack Frost?

Unfortunately, in this photo, some of the ice had already melted from the face mask and the bottom edge of my hat, and my eyelashes were no longer frozen together.

Pet services chez Sally and Lumpy.

We were discussing all of the things that our pets do/could do/ought to get paid to do, so as I was running I came up with some services that our pets offer to us. We would also like to extend this offer to others in our community.

1. Kitty Nap Aid: All that is required for this service is that you summon Lily (by calling her name from anywhere in the house) and that you be in a prone or semi-prone position. It also helps if you are in a patch of sun. She will help you sleep and purr contentedly simply because she LOVES THE NAP. Haggis and Guinness are not included in this offer. Believe me, you don’t want them to be.

2. Exercise: This would be the realm of Guinness. No matter what kind of day you are having, week you are having, month you are having, life you are having, you are required BY LAW to exercise the dog. If you do not, YOU will suffer. Your very soul will leave your body willingly, just to get away from the annoying-ness of Dawg. Get your ass outside and get moving, you lazy m’er f’er!!!

3. Mister, Mister: If you would very simply just like to enjoy pure physical beauty without ever actually having to commit to it/touch it/be involved with it, this is the option for you. Haggis is one of the most beautiful cats we have ever seen, but he will only interact when HE wants to, when he wants Greenies (he’s such a slut), or when he feels a mommy-need. Haggis dry nurses, which means that he was separated too early from his mother and will suck on your cotton (but ONLY COTTON!!!) t-shirt or shorts, replicating nursing on his mama cat and will knead (make bread) on your belly. It’s so, so sweet, but very rare. Haggis wants to be admired. From a decent and safe distance. Like art. If he needs you, he’ll come find you. That’s all he has time to do in his oh-so-busy day. I almost didn’t make it

to the port-a-potty. I decided to do a “long run” finally and ended up doing about 8.5. At approximately mile 6 my tummy went, “huh?” and I thought that it was just upset with me for running so much after having had so much time off. (And having scrambled eggs and sausage for breakfast). It then became a race to the port-a-potty. After unleashing the flames of hell from my body, I realized that I was really, really hungry, and still had another mile and a half to go. I made it home, I made it through my run, I made my day. People were pleasant today and there were some really happy pooches out walking. The snow that was on the paths was a little too soft, and I think I’ll be mightily sore tomorrow, but it’s all good.

Other than the poopy drama, I had another fun run. I felt relaxed. Lumpy and I were talking yesterday and I feel change in the air. Don’t know what it means. Don’t care. I’m just runnin’. And grinnin’.

The sun is shining! The sun is shining!

I just got back from another great run. My legs were a little bit heavy and my lower back was fairly pinched up, but the weather was stunning again today (18F with wind chill) and very sunny. I should have worn my visor!!! G was having some trouble with the salt on the sidewalks today, but overall we both did great.

I finally experienced runner’s high.

Today’s 5 miles rank among the top 3 runs I’ve ever done. Everything lined up. Great weather (10F with wind chill, overcast, damp yet packed snow), good hydration, proper attire, dog in joyous state, all by myself. I hit running nirvana. It’s been a while since that has happened, so I feel like I earned this one.

Wow!

Lumpy, coworker #1, and I just saw Spirit of the Marathon tonight. That was incredible. I didn’t start really crying until the end when the runners actually did the marathon. It was everything I hoped it would be and I feel like I need to own that movie now!!! Time to get to work and get back into training for something…

Don’t forget! It’s tonight.

In case you miss it, there will be an encore on February 21st.

Words of wisdom from Martin Luther King, Jr.

Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter.

When you are right you cannot be too radical; when you are wrong, you cannot be too conservative.

Human salvation lies in the hands of the creatively maladjusted.

A right delayed is a right denied.

Almost always, the creative dedicated minority has made the world better.

He who passively accepts evil is as much involved in it as he who helps to perpetrate it. He who accepts evil without protesting against it is really cooperating with it.

History will have to record that the greatest tragedy of this period of social transition was not the strident clamor of the bad people, but the appalling silence of the good people.

In the interim…

A short list of the goings-on in my life:

*I put on 5 pounds.

*On Christmas Day evening, Lumpy and I went sledding. I ended up at urgent care getting stitches.

*I ran and did strength training. I’m still sore.

*She Runs is in full force planning/preparation for our spring session.

*I stumbled upon a French teaching position through community ed-French I on Monday eves.

*I stumbled upon a French conversation position the same way, as well as a women’s running group; both start in the spring.

*I spent a lot of time being quiet.

*I’ve been to the chiropractor 3-4 times. One of my legs is shorter than the other due to trouble with my hips and back.

*I started a food log.

*I had a really quiet Christmas and New Year. (Other than the stitches.)

*I got more reading done on the history of Canada. A little light reading on the side.

*I cleaned out a bunch of books and gave them away.

*I helped a coworker move into her first apartment.

*I spent a lot of time doing a lot of self-talk.

*I decided to run every race I feel like doing, even if they are consecutive weekends. Continue reading ‘In the interim…’
