yep, I’m answering my own survey first.
1. The Joy Luck Club
2. The Poisonwood Bible
3. Fast Food Nation
4. The Baroque Cycle - three books by Neal Stephenson
5. Dog is My Copilot
These are in no particular order, and I reserve the right to change them at any time.
Ok, my turn now.
1. The Mists of Avalon
2. The Time Traveler’s Wife
3. L’Amant
4. Holidays on Ice
5. A Year in Provence
Also, none of these are in any particular order…just depends what kind of mood I’m in. As a matter of fact, I think it’s time for some Holiday’s on Ice…again! Recently I’ve been in French Lit mode…reading some Balzac short stories and some Colette - yes, I usually read multiple books at a time…jump around from one to the other.
p.s. I own The Poisonwood Bible, I tried reading it, but I could not get past the 1st couple of chapters…I may need to revisit that again.
Ok, let’s see….
1. Lolita (Vladamir Nabokov)
2. 100 Years of Solitude (Gabriel Garcia Marquez)
3. In the Time of the Butterflies (Julia Alvarez)
4. Holidays on Ice (David Sedaris)
5. Pedodogy of the Oppressed (Paulo Freire)
Just five? I really like books. I’m currently reading Love in the Time of Cholera (Toots and I just saw the movie). Mine are also in no particular order and some are subject to change….except for #1…I really like that book. I like most stuff by my top 4 authors in general. EVERYONE should read Holidays on Ice! It is so funny!! I laugh out loud every time I read it and then I chuckle all day after I’ve read it.
P.S. The author of The Poisonwood Bible went to DePauw!
P.P.S. I like that we like to read.
Oh crap…I fixed the comments so now I have to comment…
(in no particular order)
1. The Complete Works of Edgar Allen Poe
2. The Complete Works of H. P. Lovecraft
3. Neuromancer (William Gibson)
4. 1984 (George Orwell)
5. Crap…I gotta decide?! Okay, I’m ganna have to name six:
5.1 Snow Crash (Neil Stephenson)
5.2 Callahan’s Crosstime Saloon (Spider Robinson)
Oh My Gawd. I forgot A Handmaid’s Tale. This might actually be my favorite book. Evah. As I told Lumpy, I judge whatever the current administration is by this book. As soon as I no longer have access to my money and Lumpy tells me, “Don’t worry baby, I’ll always take care of you” I am leaving the country as fast as I can drive/paddle/fly/run/hike/backpack/hitchhike……………… I will never again think of women and government the same way after reading this book.
Sally, I was wondering about the Handmaid’s Tale and why you had not listed it. As a matter of fact, I was recently discussing this book with Garner Girl at work…not a very in depth conversation…it just sort of came up…. It’s also one of my favorites…maybe you should have asked for the top 10 books. I agree with Banana, love it how we all love to read…cool.
Okay, so Pedagogy of the Oppressed is a top 1.75 for me. It’s an essential if you are going into EX ED. I have now read it for two classes. What does that say about what I am going into?!?!
MINE…..
1.Number The Stars (Lois Lowry)
2.Fat kid Rules The World (K.L. Going)
3.Viva El Beck (John Blake)
4.Things Not Seen (Andrew Clements)
5.The Silent Boy (Lois Lowry)
…Also not in any particlar order, but the #1 is currently my favorite book, written by my one of my favorite authors as you may see in the #5.
