There comes a time in every man’s life when he must stop thinking and start doing.

Thanks to Lumpy and Crew for the warm welcome!  I’m thrilled to be a part of your group as I navigate the road to 26.2 in Sin City.  As you know, this will be my first marathon.  A year and a half ago, running to the end of the block was a little too far and the idea of running a marathon?  Laughable.  With help from Lumpy, Sally and a certain small and furry running partner, well… It’s still kind of laughable.  And sometimes I cry about it too.   It’s a learning experience, right?  A challenge.  Mentally and physically.  Character building.

In the words of my hero, Benjamin Sisko: “There comes a time in every man’s life when he must stop thinking and start doing.”  It’s a process.  And I’m doing it.  I already have the most important piece of my marathon puzzle figured out: I’ll be dining at the Bellagio’s all-you-can-eat buffet after the race.  Even if someone has to carry me there.

You know, I never told Toots about this, but after her first marathon, I went to class at school and talked about her training for her first marathon and the evolution of fan to runner and cried in front of my class a little bit. I was so proud. I don’t know that either one of us ever thought that she would ever run one, not that I didn’t think she COULD. I know you’ll be fine, no matter what. In the end, it’s just a race. In the greatest of contexts, it’s a metaphor for life. Take it either way…just try to enjoy it. There will never be another first marathon.

I think I’m going to cry. Oh my…we’re a bunch of crybabies! Sally, I did not know this…we will have to hash this one out soon. I’m having such a tough week…mainly cuz I’m tired…but this if very uplifting. THANK YOU!!!

WELCOME COWORKER #1!!! Looking forward to your entries. I have a friend who is training for the same marathon, but he’s only doing the 1/2…he’s running in drag and raising money for the San Francisco AIDS Foundation.

Lumpy, maybe you should add Sin City to the countdown?

  3. 3 Toots

Thanks, Lumpy! WOW…it’s HOT in Sin City!
