Signs.

There were a million reasons why I probably should not have run today…I mean the “signs” (do you believe in signs?) were quite blatant. First there was the jetstreamsurfer’s work schedule adjustment and trying to figure out what to do with punxsk8erdude while I ran my 20 miler. Then there was punxsk8erdude’s science fair project that we had to work on, last minute of course (due tomorrow). Oh yeah, there was the washing machine incident, followed by the skateboard incident - you can ask punxsk8terdude about that. When Pito saw me today (before my run) he thought I had already done my run…he was surprised to hear I was just getting started because apparently I already looked tired.

George Sheehan in The Complete Book of Running.

“Where have all the heroes gone? They’ve gone with the simplicities and the pieties and the easy answers of another era. Our lack of heroes is an indication of the maturity of our age. A realization that every man has come into his own and has the capability of making a success out of his life. But also that this success rests with having the courage and endurance and, above all, the will to become the person you are, however peculiar that may be. Then you will be able to say, ‘I have found my hero and he is me.’”

2,500 calories, or there abouts

americone-dream.jpgYup. Running about 20 miles (I ended up at around 19 today according to the GPS—I think I must have lost signal at some point) burns, for me, about 2,500 calories. That comes out to about 2 pints of Stephen Colbert’s Americone Dream. We only shared a 1/2 pint after the run, but it was good. Glad to know Stephen’s got my back for this run…

Lorraine Moller in Boston Marathon by Tom Derderian

“In the greater game we strive not for winning, but to extend our personal boundaries of who we are and what we can be, not as much to become faster as to become more, not to punish but to enjoy, not to beat someone else, but to become the best we can be, not to destroy others, but to create ourselves in motion as a celebration of our creaturehood. True excellence is achieved only in playing the greater game.”

Attention, Paris. (ah-tahn-see-oh (n), Pah-ree)

We got lucky with the weather, no rain, pleasant temp, wind sucked, but why wouldn’t it? I think overall I was pleasantly surprised by this run. I didn’t do it quite as quickly as I would have liked, but I was running 8:50-9:00 min. miles up until about mile 15-17. I pushed a little somewhere in there, then just started to fade, which is okay, because I ran 22, not 20. Lumpy’s co-worker, our friend, Co-worker #1, met us at the end. I had set up times to meet a few of my own, but one did not show and the other, whom we shall name Co-worker #2, ended up not meeting me at the place we agreed, but at the same spot as Co-worker #1. Worked out well for me, after all. I didn’t need help as much as I thought I would. It gives me hope. The marathon is 3 weeks from today. I love running and I hate running, and I still approach this marathon with much reverence. In the words of Joan Benoit Samuelson, who I very much admire…”I feel about marathons the way my parents taught me to feel about the ocean: it is a mighty thing and very beautiful, but don’t underestimate its capacity to hurt you.” I don’t. Watch out, Paris, I’m coming for you, and I speak your language, and I know how and where you live.

Hola!

Finally made it to the posting page! I was thinking of using mapmyrun to see how far I have to walk/run at my gig at Marriott. At United I get to use my upper body strength. Keeps me from gettin’ fat!

A. J. Stanley

“It’s this simple: If I never try anything, I never learn anything. If I never take a risk, I stay where I am. If I go ahead and do it, that affects how much I continue wanting to do it. When I hold myself back, I trade appearances for the opportunity to find out what I am like.”

Good ol’ Teddy Roosevelt

“Far better it is to dare mighty things, to win glorious triumphs, even though checkered with failure, than to rank with those poor spirits who neither enjoy much nor suffer much, because they live in the grey twilight that knows neither victory nor defeat.”

phew

I did not run today, but I did scooter to work today, then took the dog for an hour long walk. Yes, my legs ARE tired. I am not running today or tomorrow in an effort to have minor success in my 22 miler.

Toots, what route are you running this weekend? Are you running Saturday or Sunday? It looks like we’re all running in rain this weekend. I think I’m going to wear my I love running t-shirt to test it out and see if it’s what I want to wear marathon day. I don’t think I’ll put my name on my shirt in Paris if it works well.

Fashion is really what it’s all about.

I’m so glad this week is almost over….

I think Mother Nature is still pitying me with overcast skies…but she’s not helping much with the humidity factor.  Today’s run was a bit tough.  My legs felt heavy and tired, it was hard putting one foot in front of the other.  I just took it slow…practically brought it down to a c r a w l .  Not really, but that’s kind of what it felt like.  I thought I would never finish.
