Sand, snow, it’s all the same to tired legs.

We got to run while it was snowing, which was beautiful and fun, but the paths around the lakes had not really been cleared, so it was like a few weeks ago, and running on the snow was just as bad as running in unpacked sand. I was just FOUL. I spent most of the run fighting with DAWG, as well, so I was pooped by the time I finished. I feel fine now, and I have a sneaking suspicion that my runs this week will be fabulous. I got a crappy week out of the way, now it’s time for the pendulum to swing back to the good side. We took a few pictures, but posting them might mean I would have to walk upstairs. Hmm. No pictures, I say. So, with our weekly champagne celebration of even the worst runs ever, here’s a toast to accepting the tao of running and realizing that really great runs have to have really bad runs to balance everything out.

A bit of Asian wisdom….

“When the shoe fits the foot is forgotten.” - Chuang Tzu

This may have also been part of the problem for me today…I think it’s time for a new pair.

“The truth is we can all run faster. But the truth hurts”- unknown

It’s so true.  Today’s 7 miler was somewhat painful.  After last week’s great 10 miler, I thought I’d try to pick up the pace a bit.  It backfired on me…before I knew it I was ready to quit.  I was cold, I was wet, I was having trouble with my breathing, and I was tired.  Maybe I’m coming down with something…?  This was probably not the best week to try to pick up the pace.  It’s been a long week. I worked 9 days straight, (I finally had a day off today), and even though I haven’t missed any of my runs, I did all of my last 3 runs indoors (yes, including the 5 miler…ugh!).  I’ll just blame it on the ice…needless to say, I’m extremely tired and probably should be asleep right now.  Instead I decided to take down the Christmas tree (hadn’t gotten around to it yet) and now that I’m done, I’m a little wired.

Hives. Lots and lots of hives.

I’ve been horridly broken out the last few days. It was not pretty. I did not run.

Watch out bloggers, Congress is gunning for you.

This is from www.feministing.com:
Congress cracks down on critics.

The Ethics and Lobby reform bill has an amendment that could potentially force bloggers and other forms of grassroots communication to register as a lobbyist to speak.

“In what sounds like a comedy sketch from Jon Stewart’s Daily Show, but isn’t, the U. S. Senate would impose criminal penalties, even jail time, on grassroots causes and citizens who criticize Congress. “Section 220 of S. 1, the lobbying reform bill currently before the Senate, would require grassroots causes, even bloggers, who communicate to 500 or more members of the public on policy matters, to register and report quarterly to Congress the same as the big K Street lobbyists. Section 220 would amend existing lobbying reporting law by creating the most expansive intrusion on First Amendment rights ever. For the first time in history, critics of Congress will need to register and report with Congress itself. “The bill would require reporting of ‘paid efforts to stimulate grassroots lobbying,’ but defines ‘paid’ merely as communications to 500 or more members of the public, with no other qualifiers.

Ann suggested I look to the ACLU about this, but they haven’t written much yet. Does anybody know anything more about this?

And who the hell is getting paid? Congress must just be trying to give me a big lobbying job, not cracking down on my right to free speech.

MmmmMMMmm: Coffee is good for my running!

0250027.jpgNow this is just what I like to hear. More scientific research showing how coffee continues to help me. I typically have DOMS (Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness). See, having a couple of cups of coffee before my long runs was the right thing to do all along. This is great news!

Caffeine may ease post-workout pain: study

NEW YORK (Reuters Life!) - That morning cup of coffee may help ease post-exercise muscle soreness, if preliminary research is correct.

Until one is committed, there is hesitancy, the chance to draw back, always ineffectiveness. Concerning all acts of initiative (and creation) there is one elemental truth, the ignorance of which kills countless ideas and splendid plans: That the moment one definitely commits oneself then providence moves, too. All sorts of things occur to help one that would never otherwise have occurred. A whole stream of events issue from the decision, raising in one’s favor all manner of unforeseen incidents and meetings and material assistance, which no man could have dreamt would have come his way.

I have learned a deep respect for one of Goethe’s couplets,”Whatever you can do, or dream you can, begin it. Boldness has genius, power and magic in it.”

BOLDNESS. There’s that word again. Toots and Sally. Bold. Going forth. Running. Audacieux. hmmm. Things to think about.

5°F with windchill is…refreshing.

Tonight’s run was good. Lumpy and I ran together. I mixed my schedule, combining a 3 mile run with a 7 mile run and we did 5-ish. Felt good. The thing about running in cold weather when it’s windy, is that in one direction you are dressed perfectly. In the opposite direction, you’re hot as hell. Unfortunately, that’s just the way it is. I felt great tonight and I’m glad it’s a step-back week. The shorter mileage is a nice break. Grad school started this week, and I’m going to have a crapload of reading to do and think about and some massive writing to do. I’m pretty sure all of my runs will be filled with thoughts of feminist theory, race relations, transgender issues, and class structure in the U.S. today. whoo. On top of that, I need to start thinking about where I would like to attempt to get a teaching job, if I’ll even be able to…send good vibes. I will need ‘em this semester.

Site problems…

Something wrong with the site today…working on getting things back in order…

Update: Should be mostly good now. Mainly problems with stuff on the right sidebar. Let me know if anything looks amiss.

Ice, ice, baby….

San Antonio has pretty much shut down today and I don’t think tomorrow will be much different.  Too much ice, sleet & below freezing temps (28-31….brrrrr).  Ok, Lumpy & Sally, don’t make fun, I know it pails in comparison to your current 5 degree weather….

Anyway, made it to work a couple of hours late and managed to get my 3 miler in during lunch - at the gym of course.  Didn’t want to be out on the slick streets with all the crazy drivers slipping and sliding all over the place.  Hoping for some snow for tomorrow’s 5 miler - yeah, right!Â
